UPDATE: We have been reliably informed by the director of the NH Chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) that, through mutual friends, he was able to ask Willie if he actually said this, as there has been some controversy, particularly over at Snopes.com, whether Willie did or not, or whether it was paraphrased from the writing of humorist Argus Hamilton by some anonymous fabricator on the internet. Willie says that he never said it, but really enjoyed the statement it made. Thanks, Willie!

So file this under your "coulda, shoulda, woulda said, but didn't actually say it" department. Who knows, now that he's been made aware of it, you may be hearing him say it some time in the near future!

We might point out to those who are unfairly singling out spinach in these times of e coli tainted food, that this is very un-PC, as the Atlanta Journal-Constitution says:

My PC book says that we can't just profile spinach. We have to pull all vegetables off the shelves.
